The urgency of addressing sustainability challenges has never been greater. Climate change threatens our planet, and marginalized communities often bear the brunt of environmental degradation. However, technology and open innovation offer a beacon of hope. The 2023 Call for Code Global Challenge, in partnership with IBM, invites developers and problem solvers worldwide to harness the power of AI and machine learning to create impactful solutions for global sustainability issues. The Call for Code Global Challenge


The Call for Code Global Challenge is a rallying call to technology enthusiasts, developers, and innovators to build solutions that leverage IBM AI technologies to tackle global sustainability problems. Beyond the opportunity to win prizes, participants will gain valuable skills in emerging technologies while contributing to projects with the potential to make a significant positive impact on our planet.


Addressing Sustainability Challenges


The Global Challenge focuses on diverse sustainability challenges. Participants are encouraged to develop solutions that address one of the following critical areas:


1. Carbon Emissions: Enhance the ability to measure, analyze, or take decisive action on carbon emissions.


2. Clean Energy Access: Improve access to affordable and reliable clean energy sources.


3. Supply Chain Transparency: Enhance supply chain transparency and traceability to swiftly identify sustainability issues.


4. Water Scarcity and Quality: Address issues related to water scarcity and water quality.


5. Waste Reduction: Reduce the volume of materials that create significant waste footprints (e.g., plastics, electronics, food, textiles) and promote reuse and recycling.


6. Biodiversity Conservation: Develop effective ways to promote, preserve, and protect biodiversity.


7. Food Security: Reduce global food insecurity through improvements in distribution and sustainable farming practices.


Prize Information


Participants have the opportunity to win prizes from a substantial funding pool of up to $1.4 million USD. The 2023 Global Challenge consists of multiple rounds, with Challenge Round prizes available. At the end of the year, winners from all Challenge Rounds will compete for Grand Prizes.


- Startup/ISV Category: Winners receive $50,000 USD, personalized IBM AI discussions, mentoring, and solution implementation support.


- General Developer Category: Similarly, winners in this category receive $50,000 USD, personalized IBM AI discussions, and open source support from The Linux Foundation.


- University Category: Winners here receive $50,000 USD, a $30,000 grant to their educational institution, IBM mentorship, and open source support from The Linux Foundation.


Geographical Areas


Participants can join from various regions worldwide, each defined by geographical groupings. Prizes will be awarded to the highest-scoring submissions in each region. Regions include Europe, Asia, North America, Latin America, the Middle East, and more. Your team's region is determined by the countries provided during registration.


Eligibility Criteria


To participate, teams must meet specific eligibility criteria based on the selected Prize Category:


- Startup/ISV Category: Team members must be employed by a startup or Independent Software Vendor (ISV) operating for less than 10 years.


- University Category: All team members must be students enrolled in an accredited higher education institution.


- General Developer Category: Team members from various backgrounds, including freelancers, enterprise developers, and students, are welcome.


Judging Criteria


Submissions will be evaluated based on criteria that include completeness, effectiveness, design, creativity, and innovation. Judges will provide scores ranging from 0 to 20 points, with the final score being the average of these assessments.
