The 2022 Global Media Competition (GMC) organized by the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC), a partner of STOP (a global tobacco industry watchdog), seeks compelling social media graphics and short videos portraying tobacco's damaging impact to the environment and how the tobacco industry aggressively hides it by making us believe that it is environmentally conscious.
Tobacco kills 8,000,000 people each year, costing the world’s economy US$1.4 trillion annually. In addition, tobacco is a major disruptor to the ecosystem – from its plastic materials and environmental toxins (aggravated by the fact that cigarette butts are the most littered item on earth) to production processes that lead to deforestation, a leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions.
Through its deceptive messaging, the tobacco industry has perpetuated the problem by diverting attention from its environmental harms by participating in so-called CSR activities to make it seem that they are environmentally friendly, shifting blame to consumers, and drowning out the voices of farmers and workers impacted by its environmental damages.

Each participant may submit multiple entries, provided they comply with the competition’s theme, rules, and file requirements.
Entries from all parts of the world that are written in English are most welcome. Entries written in the national language will also be accepted, provided that the participant will supply the correct English translation.
Participants are encouraged to mention the institution (e.g., university, community groups, etc.) they are affiliated to.
It is important that participants ensure that the material is free from errors (e.g., spelling, grammar, etc.).
All participants are encouraged to post their submitted entries on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
Each entry must be the participant’s original work and must not infringe on the intellectual property or other rights of any other third party, regardless of the participant’s country of residence.
By submitting an entry, each participant agrees to grant Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) and its assignees the right without obligation, to use the visual/graphic materials for any purpose as per SEATCA’s discretion.
