In an era characterized by a complex media landscape and a plethora of urgent global challenges, students face the formidable task of navigating this intricate web of information. Enter the Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellowship, a transformative opportunity for educators to equip themselves with the tools to guide their students through these complexities. This fully-funded, virtual fellowship brings together a community of educators, esteemed journalists, and the Pulitzer Center Education team to foster an understanding of global issues, critical thinking, empathy, and informed action.
Program Overview: Navigating a Complex World
The Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellowship offers up to 16 dedicated educators a chance to delve into the dynamic world of media literacy and global issues. This virtual program spans the school year, providing Fellows with a unique opportunity to interact with fellow educators, accomplished journalists, and the Pulitzer Center's education experts. The ultimate goal? To empower educators in crafting and implementing units that empower students to comprehend global issues, hone critical thinking skills, foster empathy and inclusivity, and take meaningful action.
Enriching Learning through Engagement
Throughout the program, Fellows will dive deep into news analysis, group discussions, and direct interactions with journalists. By applying a media literacy lens to a diverse range of interconnected global topics—such as climate change, artificial intelligence, global health, and migration—Fellows will sharpen their skills in deciphering media narratives. These narratives are delivered through various mediums, including print, video, photography, and data, offering a holistic understanding of storytelling approaches.
Theme: Asking Critical Questions
The current fellowship cohort centers around the theme:
"Teaching Global Stories and Media Literacy"
In the fall semester, Fellows will participate in eight evening workshops. These sessions will explore underreported news stories and facilitate connections with Pulitzer Center-supported journalists. Furthermore, teachers will craft concise units (spanning three to five class periods). These units will kindle student curiosity toward underreported local and global issues, instill media literacy prowess, nurture empathy, and guide informed action.
Reaping the Benefits: Transformative Impact
Upon completing the fellowship, participants will gain:
- A stipend of $1,200, disbursed in three payments of $400 (December 2023, February 2024, and May 2024).
- The esteemed Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellow digital badge.
- A certificate for 35 professional learning units (PLUs), enriching their educational portfolios.
Eligibility and Requirements
This fellowship is open to classroom teachers (grades four to twelve) in public, charter, independent, and alternative schools across the United States and its territories. Educators working with adults and youth in correctional facilities are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must be currently engaged in virtual or in-person teaching and intend to continue teaching in their present schools through the end of the 2023–2024 school year. Stable internet access, along with a computer equipped with a webcam and microphone, is essential for participation.
The Journey Ahead: Fellowship Structure
Fellows will embark on this transformative journey by participating in a virtual orientation on October 28, followed by eight weekly evening sessions from October 2023 through January 2023. Each session will extend for two hours. The initial five sessions will encompass seminars with celebrated journalists and a deep dive into underreported news stories related to systemic issues. The subsequent three sessions will focus on engaging strategies, unit brainstorming, and peer feedback on drafts. All sessions will unfold live via Zoom, ensuring immersive and interactive experiences.
The Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellowship is more than just a program—it's a conduit for educators to unlock their potential as mentors, navigators of information, and agents of change. By participating in this fellowship, educators can not only equip themselves with invaluable tools but also empower their students to become informed global citizens who can tackle the challenges of our interconnected world.
