In the ever-evolving landscape of innovation, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) presents an exciting opportunity for young minds in Cyprus. The Youth Innovation Factory (YIF) is here, and it's not your typical venture builder. This multi-month program is designed to empower young Cypriots (aged 18-35) to bring their tech-based innovations to life, with a special focus on themes aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this blog, we'll explore how YIF is fostering innovation, collaboration, and sustainability in Cyprus.
Unlocking Youth Potential
UNDP believes that the future of sustainability hinges on the ideas, skills, and creativity of young people. YIF is a testament to this belief. It's more than just a program; it's a platform where young innovators can turn their ideas into impactful realities. With the right environment, resources, and support, YIF aims to unleash the potential of young minds in Cyprus.
A Practical Approach to Innovation
YIF goes beyond traditional incubators and accelerators. It adopts a practical approach, fostering synergies between local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the private sector, Technical Committees, and young tech innovators. The goal is to create an ecosystem where passionate young minds come together to address real-world challenges faced by local communities and stakeholders. YIF sources challenges from those on the front lines, empowering youth to build innovative, tech-based solutions using cutting-edge technologies like gamification, web/mobile, AR/VR, AI, and more.
Program Themes
This YIF cohort focuses on two themes, each integral to the sustainable development of Cyprus:
1. Environment:
- Biodiversity (conservation/protection)
- Water Management
- Waste Management (circular economy)
- Disaster Risk Reduction and Preparedness
- Carbon Management
- Green/Alternative Energy
- Climate Action
- Marine Conservation
- Air Quality
2. Social Cohesion:
- Intangible/Tangible Cultural Heritage (Protection and preservation)
- Peacebuilding (confidence-building measures, Peace-tech solutions)
- Strengthening civil society
- Integration of refugees and migrants
- Governance – cyber-security
- Economy
- Civic engagement
Innovators participating in YIF can leverage the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework while crafting their tech-based solutions.
The YIF Journey
Selected participants will embark on a transformative journey within the Factory. Over three months, they'll validate their ideas, build Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), shape compelling narratives, and establish the groundwork for sustainable change. Along the way, they'll receive hands-on training and invaluable mentorship. The program entails specific tasks and deliverables, all culminating in a final pitch to a distinguished jury panel. The teams that successfully complete the program and its requirements stand a chance to receive €25,000 as seed funding to further develop their solutions.
Eligibility Criteria
The Youth Innovation Factory is open to all aspiring innovators across Cyprus aged 18-35. To be eligible, applicants should have a genuine interest in or passion for developing and launching innovative tech-based solutions that address social and/or environmental challenges. YIF encourages teamwork, with groups consisting of at least two members and a maximum of four.
